Poland and Lithuania officially merged into one kingdom on July 1, 1569. It was called 'the Polish-Lithunian Commonwealth' (Rzeczpospolita) even though Poland was mostly in charge. At first, the union was very strong, defeating Russia in 1583. But Russia came back again (as usual) and defeated them in 1654.
The union was eventually disbanded and Poland was partitioned among Russia, Prussia, and Austria.
Lithuania was mostly siezed by Russia and totally dominated.
